HD Sails’ Andy Davis has been making fast 420 sails for over 12 years. Sailors such Hannah Mills used Andy’s 420 spinnakers whilst Stuart Bithell and Jonny Mcgovern used the full set to get themselves to the ISAF Youth Worlds.
After our success in the Optimist class, HD have been working on sails for other Youth classes. We have been working with sailors who have been using HD Sails in their Optimists and moved up and into the 420. Our designs are compatible with the Super Spar and Selden rigs.
For the Mainsail we have designed it using a crosscut layout, this gives a control over the shape and allows a bigger wind range for the sail to be used in, it’s very easy to make the sail full for powered up conditions but yet flatten off for when its windy. The mainsail is built using Contender’s 3.8oz Polykote, a popular cloth used through out the industry for its excellent stability and consistency.
The jib is also made using the cross cut layout. The jib comes with leech battens to allow more control to the leech profile. The jib is also built using Contender’s 3.8oz Polykote.
The spinnaker is made using Contender’s Dynakote 0.75oz, this is a silicone based fabric that allows the spinnaker to launch faster than non-silicone spinnakers and to shed more water. The shape has been design to give all round performance.
